Book Club Discussion #3 (Fall 2024)

  • Hammer Health Sciences Building, Room LL2-205 701 West 168th Street New York, NY, 10032 United States (map)

For the fall semester of the 2024 academic year, we are hosting a book club featuring Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum by Antonia Hylton. In her book, Hylton casts a gritty spotlight on the history of Crownsville Hospital, one of the largest segregated hospitals with records still available today. Through this harrowing story, Hylton exposes the intersection of race, mental health, and systemic oppression in the early 20th century.

This third session will be the final one for this book. The last discussion will focus on Part Four and Part Five (pages 201-319); however, reflections across the entire book will be welcomed and encouraged. Antonia Hylton will also be joining us for a Q&A!
